The First Thing and the Last

Wednesday, September 29, 7:00 pm

Allan G. Johnson will read from his new novel and will tell the story of what it took to overcome the publishing industry's resistance to bringing into print this inspiring story of healing and redemption in the aftermath of domestic violence.

Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine named The First Thing and the Last one of its “Great Reads” for April 2010 and Publishers Weekly showcased the novel in its semi-annual issue featuring notable debut works of fiction

Liberia, A Mystical Land, A Humble People

By Mary Justin Hornish

Wednesday, October 6, 7:00 pm
Mary Justin Hornish will discuss her memoir of the 16 years she spent as a missionary nun and nurse in Africa.
Mary Justin, along with three other Sisters, arrived at a small coastal village in Liberia in 1971, where there was no way in or out except by a small plane or dugout canoe.  The Society for African Missions had been there for several years, so a church and a school had already been established, but help was desperately needed.
The people in the bush lived a primitive life with practices of witchcraft and human sacrifice. Education, especially in health care, was vitally important.  Mary Justin’s journey was filled with adventure, hard work, heartache, and memories of kindness and hospitality.  What took place during those years was beyond her imagination and led her to living a deeper dimension of the spiritual life.
